چکیده

Data-centric routing is a new paradigm of routing mechanism adapted for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where the data request and collection is done based on data attributes rather than node IDs and using only local interactions. An example of data-centric routing protocol is Directed Diffusion, in which sinks disseminate queries in order to collect data from a specific area. Both query dissemination as also data collection in case of event detection imply an increase of the network load, which can seriously compromise the WSN performance in terms of reliability, delay and energy consumption. In this study we examine how the previously proposed Low power listening with Wake up after Transmissions MAC protocol (LWT-MAC), designed to react and manage sporadic load increases, is also well suited for data-centric WSNs. The obtained results demonstrate that LWT-MAC is able to cope with the higher load produced by the operation of Directed Diffusion, showing a notably better performance when compared to basic Low Power Listening (LPL) MAC protocols.

Wake up after transmissions and reduced channel contention to alleviate the hidden terminal problem in preamble sampling WSNs

The hidden terminal problem is a well-known problem in wireless networks that degrades the network performance due to collisions between nodes unable to sense each other. Preamble sampling WSNs are more sensitive to that problem than wireless local area networks due to the high vulnerability time caused by the long preamble transmission. This is specially important when the traffic load is high...

EEQR: An Energy Efficient Query-Based Routing Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a very challenging task due to the large number of nodes, their mobility and lack of proper infrastructure. Since the sensors are battery powered devices, energy efficiency is considered as one of the main factors in designing routing protocols in WSNs. Most of energy-aware routing protocols are mere energy savers that attempt to decrease the energy...

Taking Advantage of Overhearing in Low Power Listening WSNs: A Performance Analysis of the LWT-MAC Protocol

LWT-MAC is a new Low Power Listening MAC protocol for WSNs designed to rapidly react to instantaneous increases of the network load. It takes advantage of overhearing by waking up all nodes at the end of a transmission to send or receive packets without needing to transmit the long preamble before. In this work, detailed analytical models of the LWT-MAC and B-MAC protocols, for both saturated a...

Multi-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...
